On pins and needles: What are you pushing on Pinterest?
I was lucky to receive a Pinterest invite in 2011, but didn’t put it to use until this month. I’m having fun pinning interesting items for specific categories (Birmingham, pop culture), while browsing through everyone else’s boards.
But I’d love to learn how you’re using Pinterest, how you’re finding great things to pin and more.
- What are you pinning?
- Who do you follow?
- What’s your secret guilty pleasure on Pinterest?
Drop a comment with a link to your Pinterest page and even the board your most proud of creating and maintaining. And of course, let me know your answers to those questions above.
Be clever, be wordy and be linky. I’ll write a post about the Pinterest pal who writes the best comment within the next week. (And if you need an invite, feel free to contact me.)
And my True Pinterest Confession? I have to eat something every time I start browsing, because I’m following people who have an eye for beautiful entrees, snacks and sweets. I’m going to end up gaining a pound during each session!

I pin everything – from food to crafts to clothes and places – i pinned pictures of my dog, who had cancer and we had to put down….if it makes me laugh, smile or say HELL YEAH i pin it….. anything goes (and im trying to reorganize my boards lolol)
I follow friends and family and people who follow me. i usually browse using the everything tab though….
my guilty pleasure is pinning things id never be able to afford – but a girl can dream 😛
My favorite things to pin are gorgeous wedding details since I want to inspire the future brides that I am going to photograph with ideas for their lovely day and show ideas of images that I want to create with them. – I guess I would say that my guilty pleasures are the things that I find funny; sometimes they can be off-color. Oh, and cemetery statuary. My mother would say that I am morbid. http://pinterest.com/rachelbo1/
Hey Wade! I am trying to figure out how to grow my business using pinterest after being active on it for about two weeks. The uber analytical side of me tries to figure out the commonality between what people are repinning off my boards and why they like an item or repin an item. I even considered figuring out how to use it as part of my graduate thesis, but decided against that whim.
I am currently obsessed with turkish towels, ornate tiles and hammam style. Islamic style tile work is an interest of mine- for me the attention to detail and intricate patterning is a lyrical dance of feminine curves and masculine tension. So, today’s fave board is my hammam style bath. http://pinterest.com/laurl_on_etsy/the-hammam-style-bath/
My confession is that I am pleased when people like or repin something I have choosen, though I am still maintaining that I am not interested in what people think.
I use it for work, too. I pin recipes for using the local ingredients we carry on Freshfully.com to give people ideas for using their meat and veggie boxes.
I use Pinterest for just about everything– recipes, decorating ideas, kid crafts, party ideas. I love it! However, I do find it hard to manage my time effectively once I start. It’s internet crack.
Just a few days ago I decided to finally read up on Pinterest and learn more about it. I’m still learning and haven’t yet figured out how to incorporate it into my life. But I did browse photos of food (yum!) and pics of landscapes.
Don’t forget to add links to your Pinterest profile in your comment, please!
My secret Pinterest Guilty Pleasure is checking out the Pinterest page that shows things that have been pinned from my site. It’s nice to track and understand what is and isn’t pinnable. Anyone can check out what has been pinned from their site by typing in:
Great tip, Rachel!
I’m with Rachel, I also check out what is being pinned from my site. Most of the time it’s the same stuff, but occasionally, I find something new and it always makes me happy. 🙂
My secret would actually be what I DON’T pin. Several family members, fellow moms and teachers from my son’s school follow me and I’m scared if I pin something, they will copy it and do it before I can. Terrible, I know! HAHA!
Makes you wish Pinterest had a setting to let individual boards be public, private or shared with select people.
Exactly! HAHA!
I don’t scroll through Pinterest much. It always makes me too hungry. But I am always ready to pin something, as long as it’s unique.
The boards I enjoy curating most are the “Work Standing Up”, “Bookcase Doors” and “In-House Slides”. All of which would raise the awesome level of anyone’s surrounding. Now a room with two or three standing desks, hidden bookcase doors AND an indoor slide… that’s toom much awesome and may be the way black holes are made.
My guilty pleasure is wallpaper. It’s amazing what some printers and craft folk are doing these days. It’s not the kind of thing you can find at Home Depot, but man they can make paper and ink do some cool things.
I’m surprised you don’t have a board for Clever Dust Covers/Book Jackets. Might make for a cool gallery.
I had one for a little bit that focused on that, but it was a lot of “me too” I didn’t feel I was able to curate anything truly unique. Lots of “cool cover” boards on the service already. I am sure there is a worthy variation on that theme… just haven’t thought of it… yet…
My deepest darkest Pinterest secret is hardly a secret. My favorite board is one that I created called “Don’t Hate the Players” and it features some of my favorite international soccer stars in all their glory. It’s a bit ridiculous and not a board that most people would want to follow but over 400 people who I don’t know enjoy the heck out of it.
You can find me on Pinterest here: http://pinterest.com/cindylake/
And that board is here: http://pinterest.com/cindylake/don-t-hate-the-players/
I think that says a lot about going your own route. You could do the millionth board on home decor or wedding dresses, or something really original that will appeal to the right niche. Good job!
Oh I fought Pinterest tooth and nail as I think I already spend too much time with my two blogs and FB. My daughter tried to sell me on it and I didn’t the see point (no pun intended!), but then read where you can post your own work and get a little free exposure so I stuck my toe in the water. Now I’m hooked. I knew it.
What do I pin? Mostly photography and Paris/French things. I even try and give a little help to favorite photographers etc. by going to their blogs and pinning things I love. I pin a few recipes that I’d really make and well you know the drill Wade…one board becomes two …..and well….now I have 14. Help me stop!!!
I want to put a widget on my blog but can’t figure out how to do it unless I put the URL on every blog post. That is too time consuming when I do two blogs a day. What am I missing here? The one on the sidebar takes you to my boards, so I’m stuck in Pin Land!

PS thanks for following me on P! 🙂

When I first replied to this post a few days ago I had yet to set up my Pinterest account. I finally got around to setting up my page/board/site last night and in less than 24 hours I have six boards. The boards are ever-changing as I see things that I like that don’t fall into the specific categories I’ve already set up. I’m sure I’ll be adding more. So the content and titles of my boards continually change. I guess that’s ok?? My interests include cool and graphic textiles…I love bold colors and prints, especially in bed linens, throws and pillows. I think Pinterest forced me to truly embrace who I am and what I like…I make no excuses for liking eclectic, colorful stuff. I’ve always known I like bright colors (GOLD, YELLOW, ORANGE AND RED) and stuff that isn’t necessarily matchy-matchy. Maybe Pinterest and those who are out here will finally push me into completing my DIY list for my house. In the meantime, I’m also pinning tons of recipes!! Where does this stuff come from?? 🙂
But you know what else I’ve noticed in this short time? Pinterest has changed the way I view web sites now. I’m now looking at sites wondering if the content is ‘pinnable’ and anyone would find what I’m looking at as interesting. If I find it cool, I want to know if friends on Pinterest would also find it cool. Weird huh?
My apologies…I tried posting the profile in the last post…let’s try this again…
